Wrestling Class
Wrestling is a combat sport practiced all over the world. While there are several different competition rule sets, most of them are based on a point system, awarding the competitor who can take his or her opponent to the ground and control them there. Here at Prism Jiu Jitsu, we focus mostly on the take down aspect, and our jiu jitsu can take over from there. However, we do teach some of the control and pinning mechanisms employed by competition wrestlers.
What is required for this class:
Athletic shorts (no zippers) and a t-shirt or compression shirt. Water is recommended. Wrestling shoes are optional.
Why Wrestling
No matter how good you’re ground game is, it doesn’t mean a thing if you can’t bring a fight to the ground. Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling have proven themselves, through high level mixed martial arts competitions, to be one of the best ways to bring a fight to the ground, if we need to. In self defense scenarios, being able to drag an opponent to the ground takes away their ability to put great force behind a blow (power is generated from pushing from the ground). In competition, the competitor with the best wrestling can generally dictate where the fight takes place (standing up or on the ground, and who gets to be on top). These are some of the reasons we advise all martial artists to practice their wrestling!
