Jiu jitsu hygiene

We have all been there, you are pumped up and ready to get a good training session and then it hits you. Your partner’s BO is relentless you start to question everything starting with yourself, is it me? Is the overwhelming stench that has seemed to surround your entire being coming off your body? After doing the subtle pit check you realize you’re in the clear. That leaves the only other option… the person you are about to spend some up close and personal time with for however long your training session lasts. I can’t stress how important it is to keep a clean body along with wearing good deodorant when training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Not only that but making sure you cut your nails and clean your feet! No one wants to roll with Wolverine trim those bad boys down and save a life. The courtesy of coming into a gym clean shows respect towards your fellow teammates and will ensure that you aren’t the talk around town.

Okay now that the air is clear and we are all aware of the importance of cleanliness and general hygiene in BJJ let me give some recommendations for the best soap for Jiu Jitsu specifically. BJJ is a demanding martial art, with lots of close contact with others and sweat, this is a festa for fungal infections a common one being ringworm.

Really fast before I get into the products I’d recommend for BJJ I found out recently that bar soap is better for cleaning due to it being more concentrated since it doesn’t have any added water like body washes do. The downside is that bar soap will dry out your skin faster so if you are training multiple times a day and showering after each training session of BJJ I’d suggest you primarily look at the body washes.

Top 3 best Bar soap

  • Dial Antibacterial Bar Soap #1

I’m putting Dial at the number 1 spot simply because it has Antibacterial in the name. Plus it has the added benefit of providing a deep clean and leaves a good fragrance afterward.

  • Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar #2

Now I know I mentioned bar soap dries out your skin earlier… Cetaphil decided to call me out and make a bar specifically for sensitive skin. This soap will still clean your body without drying your skin.

  • Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Bar Soap # 3

In all honesty, every time I see Dr. Bronner’s soap I just automatically assume it is the best with all the tiny wording on their labeling it does something to my brain. In all seriousness though Dr. Bronner’s would be a great option for a more natural soap.

Top 3 Body Wash

  • Dove Men+Care Body Wash Skin Defense #1

A very versatile body wash that can be used for your entire body including your face without getting dried out.

  • VITA VIE Antibacterial Body Wash # 2

Has CERTIFIED organic ingredients…nice. It has a lemon scent that can come off strong but, better to smell too good than bad am I right?

  • Derma-nu Antifungal Soap and Antibacterial Body Wash # 3

This would have been my top choice if it wasn’t so dang expensive. This soap fights off everything a BJJ practitioner needs to avoid! Truly a jack of all trades.

Well, that’s all from me, I’m not too worried about what shampoo you choose as long as you are using shampoo. Just make sure to cut your nails and put on some of your favorite deodorant!
